The Introduction to Mediation Course is an intensive two-day course designed to enhance your understanding of mediation.
You will learn hands-on and effective techniques of managing and resolving conflicts, and improving your communication and interpersonal skills.
This course is highly interactive and includes active engagement in role plays and activities for the development of soft skills, which are essential for mediation.
Speaker
Ho Kok Yew
Ho Kok Yew is a boutique law firm founded in September 2018. Our practice includes a wide range of disciplines, the lawyers having experience in both litigation and corporate work.
Kok Yew has more than 15 years experience in practice. With a focus on litigation practice, Kok Yew also leads the corporate practice of the firm employing a practical and sensible approach, bringing together his years of practice in litigation and in corporate law, and with the advantage of prior hands-on experience in the corporate sector during his years as Head of Group Corporate Affairs at Hexagon Holdings Berhad. Kok Yew appears in both lower and superior Courts in Malaysia regularly, handling a wide range of civil, commercial and corporate disputes (breach of contract, building and construction, employment, defamation, loan facility, margin facility, tenancy, breach of trust and fiduciary duties, insurance claim disputes and land).
Kok Yew handles various aspects of contentious disputes, from civil to corporate, with an emphasis on his advisory role in commercial aspects with the aim of achieving the most effective resolution of the dispute by balancing the client’s exposure to risk and their business and/or personal and financial objectives. As a mediator accredited and appointed to the Malaysian International Mediation Centre’s (MIMC) Panel of Mediators, Kok Yew is a staunch believer of the maxim “mediate first, litigate last”, preferring flexibility and cooperation as a means of control in order to resolve conflict.
Tay Kit Hoo
Tay Kit Hoo (Kit) is a senior associate at Messrs Low & Partners, where his practice focuses on matrimonial matters and proceedings involving children. He now heads the family litigation team in the firm.
He regularly appears in the Family High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal Court as Lead or Co- Counsel.
He read law at University of Bristol and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2017. He was admitted to the High Court of Malaya in 2018. He is empanelled as a mediator with the Malaysian International Mediation Centre and a registered collaborative practitioner.
He currently serves as a committee member of the Kuala Lumpur Bar Committee. He is the Co-Chair of the Gender Equality and Diversity Committee and Young Lawyers and Pupils Committee. He is also a member of the Bar Council’s Family Law Committee, Mediation Committee and Court Liaison Committee.
Terms and Conditions
Event Policy
Places are limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
For events with registration fees, all payments must be made in advance, including bank charges. Registration will be confirmed once proof of payment is provided by email or fax, and full payment is received.
For events that are not organised by Bar Council, please note that you are subject to the relevant terms and conditions specified by the external providers.
Cancellation
Cancellations must be made in writing.
If you have failed to inform the organiser on your cancellation for three consecutive times, you may be blacklisted for future events.
Refunds
Refunds will be processed after the event is completed. This may take up to 30 business days. The conditions for refunds are as follows:
- Full refunds will be issued if the event is cancelled or postponed by the organiser due to some circumstances.
- No refunds for this course. However substitution is allowed.
The organiser reserves the right to modify, cancel or postpone the event, should circumstances arise that make such action necessary, whereupon all registration fees paid will be refunded.
Transferral
You are allowed to transfer your place to another participant, but you must notify the organiser with the necessary details.
Attendance
CPD points will not be awarded to lawyers and pupils in chambers from Peninsular Malaysia who arrive more than 15 minutes late, are not present throughout the event, or leave before its scheduled end.
Privacy
The personal information that you provide to the Bar Council, whether now or in the future, may be used, recorded, stored, disclosed or otherwise processed by or on behalf of the Bar Council for the purposes of facilitation and organisation of this event, research and audit, maintenance of a participant database for the promotion of this event, and such ancillary services as may be relevant.
