Client Account Campaign Talk: Series 4 @ Perak Bar

Description

As part of the Client Account Campaign launched on 21 June 2025 by the then-Risk Management Committee, which can
be viewed here, the committee, now known as the Risk Management and ELEVATE Committee, is organising a series of focused talks aimed at promoting awareness and best practices in managing client accounts. Through this initiative, lawyers would be able to better understand the responsibilities of being a sole proprietor or partner and manage client accounts prudently.

The talk is divided into the following three parts, which may be conducted in any sequence:

Arthur Wang Sze Yao

Arthur Wang Sze Yao obtained his LLB degree from the University of Wales, UK in 1990. He was admitted to the Bar at Middle Temple, London, in 1992 and began his pupillage with a Middle Temple chamber under the guidance of Esq Gibson Grenfell, then-Queen’s Counsel.

Upon his return to Malaysia in 1994, he commenced pupillage with Raja, Darryl & Loh. He then joined Michael Chen & Lee as Head of Litigation in 1995. His experience covers foreclosure, banking, civil and commercial litigation, contract disputes, tort, matrimonial and probate matters, bankruptcy proceedings, land and contractual disputes, injunctions as well as appellate matters in the Court of Appeal and the Federal Court. In 1997, he established the present practice of Arthur Wang, Lian & Associates.

He is an active Member of the Malaysian Bar who has been involved in the Bar Council Professional Indemnity Insurance Committee since 2004 (in 2024, the committee was renamed Bar Council Professional Indemnity Committee). He has also been involved in various risk management activities and given talks on the subject for the Bar with the aim of raising the standards of risk management in the legal profession. When the Bar Council established a dedicated Risk Management Committee, he was appointed Chairperson. In April 2026, following its merger with the Joint Working Committee on ELEVATE, he serves as Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Risk Management and ELEVATE Committee.

The Committee is currently focusing on a risk management initiative, which aims to elevate the Bar’s risk management standards to an international level and is committed to instilling elements of good governance among law practices.

Arthur Wang also sits on the Disciplinary Committee Panel of the Advocates and Solicitors Disciplinary Board and has been assisting the Bar Council in court matters, both since 2012.

 

R Jayabalan

R Jayabalan graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B (Hons)) degree from the International Islamic University Malaysia (“IIUM”) in 1996 and obtained his postgraduate Master of Business Administration (MBA) from IIUM in 2004.

Jaya was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in April 1997. He is the principal of his own firm, Messrs R. Jayabalan in Johor Bahru. His main area of practice is litigation at trial and appellate levels. He commonly handles litigation in respect of professional negligence, employment law, contract and general tort, amongst others. He actively writes and speaks on issues of law, procedure and legal practice in Malaysia.

Jaya is the current Secretary of the Malaysian Bar and a Bar Council member. He previously served as Chairman of the Johore Bar and Treasurer of the Malaysian Bar. He is currently the Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Risk Management and ELEVATE Committee. He is also the author of the book titled Jaya’s Civil Trial Handbook: Essential Practice & Procedure for Malaysian Courts.

Terms and Conditions

Event Policy
Places are limited and registration is on a first come, first served basis. The registration for this session will close on 20 May 2026 (Wednesday), at 5:00 pm.

For events with registration fees, all payments must be made in advance, including bank charges. Registration will be confirmed once proof of payment is provided by email or fax, and full payment is received.

The organiser reserves the right to modify, cancel or postpone the event, should circumstances arise that make such action necessary, whereupon all registration fees paid will be refunded.

Cancellation
Cancellations must be made in writing.

Please note that there will be no refunds for cancellations, but substitutions are allowed. Kindly inform us in writing with the relevant details at least three days in advance.

If you have failed to inform the organiser on your cancellation for three consecutive times, you may be blacklisted for future events.

Transferral
You are allowed to transfer your place to another participant, but you must notify the organiser with the necessary details at least three days in advance.

Attendance
CPD points for CPD Scheme will not be awarded to lawyers and pupils in chambers from Peninsular Malaysia who arrive more than 15 minutes late, are not present throughout the event, or leave before its scheduled end.

Privacy
The personal information that you provide to the Malaysian Bar, whether now or in the future, may be used, recorded, stored, disclosed or otherwise processed by or on behalf of the Malaysian Bar for the purposes of facilitation and organisation of this event, research and audit, maintenance of a participant database for the promotion of this event, and such ancillary services as may be relevant.
