Description
Criminal Trial Advocacy is a skill that can be learnt. The Bar Council Advocacy Training Committee has been providing this
course to Members of the Bar for more than 10 years now. This course provides an opportunity for any Member of the
Bar not only to understand and enhance their advocacy skills generally, but also to learn specific criminal defence advocacy
skills. One does not have to be a criminal law practitioner to participate in this course. Any Member of the Bar can benefit
from this course. Under the personalised tutelage of two senior lawyers experienced in handling criminal trials, you will be one of the six participants in a court room. You will be asked to do examination-in-chief, cross-examination, and submission in a drug-related case study under the watchful eyes of your trainers.
Your performance will be recorded and the video will be used as a teaching aid to explain areas which can be improved.
There is also a separate component on mitigation where you will be asked to do a plea in mitigation for your clients. You will then be shown ways to improve your level of advocacy in these areas.
It is an intense course but having heard from the previous participants how this course has been rewarding to them, we
can assure you that the knowledge and skill you will learn from this course will enhance your level of competency, not only in advocacy skills in general but particularly in criminal defence advocacy skills. The Advocacy Training Committee is delighted to announce that the courses for June will be conducted physically in the courtrooms in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
