Dato’ Azmi Mohd Ali (DJMK) is the Senior Partner of Azmi & Associates, a corporate and commercial-based law firm of close to 80 lawyers in Kuala Lumpur. He is an experienced corporate lawyer with extensive expertise in areas of mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, cross-border transac- tions, corporate restructuring, project nance, privatization, debt restructuring, energy, oil and gas.
He holds a LL.B (Hons) (University of Malaya and LL.M in US and Global Business Law (Suffolk University, Boston). He has attended a Cambridge University program on Enterprise Innovation.
Prior to becoming a corporate lawyer in 1991, Dato’ Azmi spent 6 1⁄2 years as an in-house counsel for PETRONAS. While in PETRONAS he was involved in projects of national importance such as Gas Sales Agreements, Product Sharing Contracts, Joint Development Authorities and Petrochemical Projects. He negotiated and concluded the NGPSA, a major gas development project of national importance for Malaysia, in 1990.
His vast skills and experience in the areas of corporate law are well noted and acknowledged by various international publications including AsiaLaw Profiles, Asian Legal Business and Legal 500. Every edition of Legal 500 for the past several years recognizes him as a leading corporate lawyer in Malaysia. He has represented Malaysian companies in cross-border transactions involving the US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Switzerland and other countries.
He was named as one of the members of the Merger Integration Committee of Synergy Drive Sdn Bhd in 2007-the promoter of the largest merger in Malaysian history involving eight listed companies-which created an entity with revenue of more than RM26 billion per annum and market capitali- zation of more than RM31 billion.
He has been identied by the AsiaLaw Leading Lawyers survey, since 2006 as one of the most highly-acclaimed legal experts in the Asia-Pacific region. He has been regularly consulted by the World Bank in its annual surveys on nations’ competitiveness.
He won in 2016 the prestigious International Law Oce 2016 Clients Choice Award for Malaysia in Mergers & Acquisitions. He currently sits on the Board of 3 listed companies on the KLSE, and has served as a director of Sime Darby Berhad for more than 5 years.
He is also a director for PNS Berhad (a government-owned franchise financing company). He has served as visiting Professor at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and is currently serving as visiting Professor at University Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Law School.
