Women and Death Penalty
In conjunction with World Day Against the Death Penalty on 10 October 2021, the Malaysian Centre for Constitutionalism and Human Rights (MCCHR) invites you to a public forum on Women and Death Penalty. As of 28 October 2018, there are 141 women on death row in Malaysia. Out of 141 women, 19 are Malaysians and 123 are foreigners. The majority of them have been convicted of drug crimes. In this forum, we will discuss the challenges facing women charged with capital punishment in the Malaysian criminal justice system.
Why do women get involved in drug crimes and how do the gender dynamics and female disempowerment play a part in their involvement? How does the Malaysian legal system deal with women who have experienced trauma and gender-based violence? Women face discrimination on multiple levels and how does the system protect them? Come and join us to discuss these important issues that have wide implications for the criminal justice system.
