Speaker

Deepak Pillai is a partner at Messrs Christopher & Lee Ong. He holds a Bachelor of Law (Hons) degree from University of Durham, United Kingdom. He was admitted as an advocate and solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1994. Deepak is a telecommunications and technology lawyer who has practised exclusively in the areas of technology, media and telecommunications law, and data privacy, since 1997. He heads the Technology, Media and Telecommunications and Data Privacy practice group of the firm. Deepak advises a wide array of clients from the international, private and public sectors on matters relating to IT contracts, outsourcing, electronic/mobile commerce, online financial services, IT security, telecommunications, digital media and personal data protection.

He has been described in the Asia Pacific Legal 500 over the years as “the most recognized IT specialist in Malaysia”, and “...pioneering the practice of IT law as a discrete area of law in Malaysia … almost single-handedly educating the market” and “... has an innate understanding of technology related issues whether from the legal or the business standpoint”. Deepak has been consecutively listed by the Asia Pacific Legal 500 as a “leading individual” in the area of IT and telecommunications law from 2001.

Suaran Singh is a partner in the Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Group of KDJ Law (Messrs Koh Dipendra Jeremiah Law). He has experience in all aspects of intellectual property (“IP”) matters, IT law, commercial law, and personal data protection law. He regularly advises on legal matters in the fields of entertainment, media and communications. He has been recognised as an “Up and Coming IP Lawyer Malaysia” in 2016 by Chambers Asia, and is ranked Band 3 on the Chambers Asia-Pacific 2017.

Suaran has acted in several landmark cases on IP laws in Malaysia. He handles all aspects of IP disputes, including copyright, trademark and
patent disputes.

For personal data protection issues, Suaran’s focus included advising on compliance requirements, providing training and seminars, conducting privacy audits and formulating privacy roadmaps for clients. Suaran was the Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Ad Hoc Committee on Personal Data Protection, and was involved in the drafting of the Malaysian Forum Code. He also serves as the Co-Chairperson of the Bar Council Information Technology and Cyber Laws Committee. He is an active member of the Malaysian Intellectual Property Association (“MIPA”), the Licensing Executives Society in Malaysia (“LESM”), and sits on the panel for the Malaysia Arbitration for General Level Domain Names.

Ravin Vello is a practitioner with an interest and focus in IT. He covers the area of technology litigation and corporate IT practice, which involves implementing corporate computer crime infrastructures and risk management on information systems. He has been engaged in
various technology litigation since 2000. For his corporate IT practice, his job scope includes ways to reduce and limit liabilities by looking for associated risks, and educating as well as training organisations in computer crime, information security and data theft, among others. He also conducts private seminars on computer forensics and electronic evidence. Apart from that, he advises on the development of information society platforms.

Adlin Abd Majid is a partner at Messrs Lee Hishammuddin Allen & Gledhill. She is a graduate of the University of Oxford, and has a background in information and communications technology (“ICT”), having spent close to a decade with a Malaysian government agency, advising on a range of local, regional and international ICT matters. She was instrumental in developing the legal and regulatory framework for the nation’s Multimedia Super Corridor status. Adlin also has an International Law Office Client’s Choice Award to her name. Her areas of practice include a focus on all aspects of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (“PDPA“).
